Summer 2012

Summer definitely came and went in what seemed like the blink of an eye!  I am so mad at myself for not posting since May.  So much has happened, and it is going to take me quite a while to get caught up!  I always enjoy writing new posts.  It forces me to reflect on all of God's wonderful blessings, and it is so fun to look back and read about important events/milestones in little Payton's life.  Therefore, it is going to be my goal to AT LEAST post once a month!

Summer of 2012 has been so much fun to experience with Miss Payton.  She is at SUCH a fun age right now!  It's funny because I think I say that about every stage that she is in, but she is learning so many new things so quickly and gets so much enjoyment out of the simplest things!  I always think about how many times children are referenced in scripture, and how as adults, we should be more like children in a lot of ways.  Living with a toddler definitely gives me a glimpse of what is met by this.  Payton gets SO much joy out of everyday life.  She has more fun playing outside, running in the grass, pointing to the birds, listening to dogs barking, playing in the bathtub....the list goes on and on...., than she would playing with some big expensive toy.  She's also the happiest when Ryan and I both take time out of our days to play with her together.  It's definitely obvious that she values our time, love, and attention more than anything else.  Oh the lessons about life we can learn through our kiddos!!

Payton is now 18 months old, running around like crazy, and saying more and more words everyday.  Her favorite thing to do right now is read books with me in the mornings, and I am absolutely LOVING this!  I really think many of the words she says are from what she has learned in some of her favorite books.  Her favorite thing to do with daddy is to blow him a kiss as he is leaving for work in the mornings and then run to the front window and wave real big at him as he drives by.  It is so cute!

This growing and learning phase of Miss Payton's has also brought on some changes in behavior.  Yep, you guessed it...the terrible twos are approaching!  I really don't like calling them the "terrible twos" because overall, there is definitely nothing "terrible" about this stage.  However, like any normal toddler, as Payton's personality is continuing to develop and as she is figuring out how the world "works" around her, she is quickly learning that she can't always have what she wants, that she must share her toys, that she must take a nap even if it's not exactly what she wants to be doing, that she cannot throw her food off her highchair onto the floor, etc. This has made parenting a bit more challenging!  Haha!  Ryan always laughs at me, because I tell him that I always pray that Payton will display the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control) throughout her life.  Well, Miss Payton is currently working on patience, and self-control!  But gosh, aren't we all???

When reflecting on the events this summer, it took me a minute to re-cap all that has happened...just like everyone, we have been super busy!!  Between Ryan's new Engineering position and our photo booth business, which takes up most weekends, we haven't had much free time!! However, we did take the time to enjoy several weekend trips on the boat with grandma and grandpa.  This last boat trip, Payton actually got in the water some, so that was fun!  We took a weekend trip with Payton's Uncle Brent and Aunt Ashli to St. Louis as well.  While there, we visited the zoo, which Payton loved!  She is so blessed to have so many people in her life that care so much about her and love experiencing things with her!  The three of us, Ryan, Payton, and I, also took a weekend trip to French Lick, Indiana where Payton got to play at Big Splash Adventure. (An indoor water park) In addition to these little weekend get-aways, back in August, we took a trip to Destin, Florida with my cousin Cara, her husband Jim, and their 1 year old daughter Harper.  This was so much fun!!  The little ones had a blast playing together, and us adults enjoyed each other's company as well.  It was nice because we were able to schedule in some date nights for each couple while the other couple stayed in with the little ones.  The car ride was quite the experience!  We actually rented a Suburban so that we could all ride together thinking we would have PLENTY of space.  Yeah right!  I always forget until I start packing how much is required for a week's time with a 1 year old.  Well, we not only had one, but two 1 year olds!  Let's just say we were packed to the ceiling! However, we made pretty good time and made it there and back safely, so over all it was a very successful drive!

Now that fall is approaching, I get so excited thinking about all the holidays coming up that Payton is going to have SO much fun celebrating!  This time of year always makes me extra thankful for the all the simple things in life that I so often take for granted!  We have so many exciting times coming up.  We have close friends and family members that are expecting new babies soon, and I cannot wait for Payton to get a new playmate and a new cousin!  I am so anxious for our friends/family  to experience what they already know is going to be the absolute BIGGEST blessing of their entire life.
It's so funny, because every experienced parent will always try to tell soon-to-be new parents how much having children is going to change their life.  AND, no matter how much as a soon-to-be parent you think you know what to expect, becoming a parent is just one of those blessings that just has to be experienced to be understood. There are no words to describe all of the love, challenges, excitement, growing experiences, joy, happiness, and fulfillment that God blesses us with through our children!

I have attached some pictures below of the highlights of our summer.  Although I was somewhat sad to see the summer come and go, the cooler weather has been much nicer for playing outside!  Now, if I could just slow down the growing on little Miss Payton, I'd be one REALLY happy mama! ;)

Spring!!

Fair warning...this is a long one!!  :)

What a BEAUTIFUL spring season we have been blessed with this year! The Legg family has been staying super busy enjoying this beautiful weather. From Easter, to Mother's Day, to family graduations, we have had lots to celebrate since my last post.  Also, Payton is now WALKING!!  This definitely keeps us on our toes, as Payton is a pretty fast mover and into absolutely everything!

This Easter was Payton's second Easter.  I can't believe that we are now celebrating her second holidays!  She was definitely a blast this year.  At the time, she was just starting to toddle around a little bit, so this made hunting for Easter eggs loads of fun!  Easter is probably my personal favorite holiday.  What a marvelous event to celebrate; the ressurection of our Lord!  For whatever reason, the realization of what was actually done for me on the cross, hit me hard this year!!!  I am not sure what it is that caused this, for I would like to think that I have always known and appreciated the sacarifice of Jesus not just every Easter, but every day.  However, it just seemed like I was able to really connect with it on a much more personal level this year.  Maybe its the fact that I am now a parent and can better understand the magnitude of sacrificing a son.  Maybe its the fact that since Ryan's mother passed away earlier this year,  Ryan and I have spent a lot more time discussing things of eternal value.  Whatever the reason or cause, I have been feeling lead for quite some time to share this, so here goes!

After experiencing the loss of a loved one, Ryan and I have discussed many times how God really gave and continues to give an unexplainable kind of comfort, peace, and strength to Ryan as he deals with his mother's death.  This has lead both of us to wonder how people go through life without God.  I can't imagine not having Him to turn to, not only when life throws us unexpected twists and turns, but also when things seem to fall into place so perfectly that it's so blatantly obvious that this was a "God thing!"   One particular, ordinary day at home, I found myself becoming overly curious about what it is that really keeps people from diving into an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.  I am SURE that one particular reason is just plain and simple; no one has shared with them the gospel.  I cannot stress the importance of sharing the gospel enough to those who have not been as fortunate as us who have had someone come into our lives and teach us what a life with Jesus is all about.  However, for whatever reason, that particular day, I found myself really thinking more about those who have heard the gospel over and over and OVER again, but are still somewhat hesitant to really give him their lives and jump in wholeheartedly to a life with Jesus.

As the day went on, I could not get this off my mind.  It seemed like one thought continued to lead to another.  I began reflecting on my own life as a Christian.  As I continued to do this, I began realizing that my own journey with Christ has kind of went through "phases" so to speak.  Being raised in a Christian home, I gave my life to Christ at an early age.  It may sound somewhat bad to put it this way, but it is what it is.   I was young, so my outlook as a second grader was a bit different than it is now.  I started off giving my life to Christ, because I had been taught that it was the "right" thing to do.  There was a little bit of fear involved. I wanted to do the right thing!  My parents were both Christians, and at that age, your parents are ALWAYS right.  So, why would I  not want to do this?  However, even though this is somewhat of a child-like way of thinking, I am SO thankful for this outlook, because it did jumpstart my relationship with Christ.  This is where it all began.

As I grew older, my "people pleasing" personality kind of got the best of me.  I was a perfectionist, and wanted to live life as "perfectly" as I could.  I knew scripture, I knew what was right, and that's how I was "supposed" to live.  This outlook began to find me just flat out exhausted and at times, down on myself.  Of course I knew I couldn't be perfect, but I was a Christian, and isn't that how Christians are supposed to live??  As Christ-like as possible???  Yes, BUT at the time, I wasn't yet comprehending the greatest gift and the glue that binds this altogether- GRACE!!!.....We'll get to more about that later!

Throughout highschool and college, my personal relationship with Christ kind of remained stagnant.  I hate to admit this, but I don't really know how else to put it.  Of course I still had what I thought at the time was an active prayer life.  I attended church, because that's what God "wanted" me to do.  I never once doubted my beliefs or my salvation, etc.   However, I was somewhat hesitant to really dive into scripture, and put God first.  I was almost scared.  Scared that I would know too much about my own life. Scared that all my sin would instantly be revealed to me. Scared that I would feel an enourmous amount of GUILT because I couldn't live up to Christ's expectations. Fearful that God would tell me that I should be living differently and shouldn't be hanging out with certain friends, etc. Because of this fear, I chose to just kind of remain still .  I was comfortable with what I knew AND what I didn't know!!

It wasn't until I was out of college that my relationship with Christ really began to grow.  I don't want people to read this and think that I am saying that I think I was never saved until recently, or that I went through some kind of "dark" time where I didn't know Christ. I KNOW I have been saved since the second I ask Chirst to come into my life as a little second grader, and Christ has been by my side ever since.  However, I feel that we mature and grow as Christians just like we mature and grow as people, and it is becomming evident to me that my relationship with Christ is growing like I hope it continues to do for the rest of my life.  I feel like the reason for this growth stems from me beginning to better understand what is meant by mercy and grace.

About 6 months ago, my mom starting tying to get me to read a book by Joseph Prince that talks about what is meant by the grace of God. She explained that it gives us somewhat of a freeing outlook on certain aspects of Christianity and that it really helps you to comprehend the love that Christ has for his people.  My mom is probably one of the most knowledgeable Christians I know.  I'm not just saying that because she's my mom.  She has a very strong faith, spends daily quiet times with God, and spends a lot of time reading scripture and different books by Christian authors.  If she said it was good, I knew it must be.  I still have yet to read the entire the book; however, this has initiated a lot of conversation between her and I on the topic of grace, and I feel like the magnitude of Christ's love for me and what it means to have a loving intimate relationship with him hit me like a ton of bricks!!

What I was missing in my personal relationship with Christ was the simple aspect of falling in love with who HE is!!!  What I was failing to comprehend was the power of God's grace!  When Christ died for our sins, he died for EVERY sin!  This means every sin in our past AND every sin in our future!  When we accept Christ, we will continue to sin.  He knows this, and the price has already been paid for them.  He said it himself..."It is finished."  It's already been done.  What this means is that there is nothing we can do or say that will ever be good enough to "earn" our way to heaven.  God knew this, and that's why he sent Jesus, the perfect sacrifice!  Now, when he looks at us, we are seen through Jesus, his perfect child.  When we realize this, it takes the pressure off of us "perfectionist" minded people and causes us to be forever grateful for this sacrifice.  What happens when we realize what Christ has actually done for us? What happens when we realize that Christ made a way for us to have eternal life with him? What happens when we realize that we are saved from every sin we have ever committed or ever will commit? We fall in love with him!!  What happens when you love someone?  You want to spend time with them!  You want to learn more about them!  You want to tell them everything about your life! You desire to live a life that is pleasing to them.  Not because you have to or because it's the "right" thing to do; it's because you just simply want to!! You want to worship!  You NEED to worship!  However, I feel that it all begins with falling in love with who HE is and what He has done first!

So, to sum this up, sometimes I feel that we hesitate diving into an intimiate relationship with Christ, because we are afraid of what is going to be asked of us, or what we are going to have to change about ourselves or our lives.  In reality, I don't feel like it needs to start there.  I think it needs to begin with understanding that you are forgiven and will be forgiven of EVERTTHING.  The price has already been paid. He's made the way for us to get to heaven, and all we have to do is accept Christ. NOTHING can or will change this!! It also needs to start with looking around at everything good and perfect in your life and knowing that it comes from Him.  It needs to start with realizing how much you are loved by the creator of the universe and everything in it, and falling in love with him in return.  START HERE!  Get to know him and how he loves you!  You and God will work the rest out later.  Where he wants to take you on your journey together will all come later; it will work itself out!  In a way, this perspective has even changed the way I pray for Payton as she continues to grow.  I find myself asking God to help me teach her who HE is, so that she can fall in love with him as her Savior.  If she does this, I'm not too worried about the rest!!

Like I said earlier, being a parent has helped me also to grow in my relationship with Christ in that it has helped me to understand the magnitude of Christ's sacrafice.  I LOVE that I got the privilage to celebrate my second Mother's Day this year!  My prayers were with Ryan that day, as I knew it would be a difficult day for him.  We went to church with his grandma out at her small country church, Round Praire.  Across the road from this small church was the cemetery where Ryan's mom is buried, and he hasn't been out there since the funeral.  In the past, when I would ask him about going out there, he would always respond with, "Holly, that's not where mom is."  Very true, but I still knew it would be hard.  After the services, we walked out to the parking lot with his grandma, and Ryan began walking across the road to the cemetery with little Payton.  (She toddled along right next to him, holding his hand.)  I stayed back with his grandmother and just watched as the two of them made their way over.  Sunday was such a beautiful sunny day, in quite contrast to the cold January day of the funeral.  It was also so strange seeing Payton walk, and I was reminded how much things have changed since even this past January.  Once the two of them made it to the grave site, I had to hold back the tears, as I watched Ryan throw Payton into the air and she let out the sweetest little giggle. It was such symbolism as to how even through life's struggles, life really does move on. Never the same, but it does move on, and joy is still there!! Sometimes I wonder if we never experienced struggles in life, would we long to be in our eternal home, in the arms of our loving Savior?  I also wonder, if we never experienced the death of a loved one, would we understand the greatness of Christ's death on the cross?  I can't answer that, but I do know that Christ is in complete and total control!  As I continued to stand there watching the two of them, I thought about how quickly it seems we move through different phases of life.  Life really can throw us so many twists and turns, good times and hard times. I feel that the unpredictability of this rollar coaster ride that we call life, is another important reason why it is so important to cling tight to our Lord, the ONLY thing that stays the same, yesterday, today, and tomorrow!!

We are so anxious to move into summer!  Payton is at SUCH a fun age, and I can't wait to spend my summer days with her!  We've never been more thankful for the wonderful blessings that God continues to provide!

A special thanks to Uncle Brent at Iconik Studio for spending the afternoon at the park with us, taking some AWESOME pictures!!

Happy Birthday Payton!

Well, we've made it to our first birthday! Payton officially turned one year old on Sunday, March 11 at 2:26 pm. We spent the weekend in Fairfield, and had her party on Sunday with some of our closest friends and family members. Payton had a GREAT time! I had to go with a puppy dog theme since "dog" was Payton's first word, and because her favorite thing to do at home is chase around poor Ali dog! Lol! It actually turned out pretty cute and was LOADS of fun to plan, so a big "thank you" goes out to all those who helped put it all together!

It was no surprise to me that Payton's first birthday brought me many mixed emotions. When I reflect on this past year, and look at how happy, healthy, sweet, and loving little Payton is today, I am nothing shy of estatic and grateful to God for the MANY blessings, challenges, happiness, and love that he is showing us in the form of this precious little girl! However, like all parents, I am also a little sad that this year went by SO fast, and that my baby is growing up! I guess that's the selfishness in me, realizing that I will never again get to see or hold Payton as that innocent, helpless, and fragile little newborn.

Ryan and I also kind of looked at Payton's first birthday as some what of a mini celebration for making it through that first year of parenthood. Boy have we learned a lot! I thought it would be neat to take note of what we feel were some of the most important aspects of parenting and important lessons we have learned as we first embarked on this journey a year ago. Hopefully, when it comes time for baby #2, or when we are having one of those "challenging" parental moments, we can look back at this and remember what the important things really are!!

1) As a young married couple, God continues to guide us, mold us, teach us, and re-direct us daily when it comes to parenting. Therefore, first and far most, we have grown to realize that the most important component to our parenting experience so far, has been having God play an active role in this whole process. I really feel that he teaches us through our challenges and provides us direction, peace, and guidance when we need it most! He has helped our marriage grow stronger through the difficult times and has brought us closer to Him through it all! I have been told by many experienced parents that the challenges only become greater as your children grow, so the MOST important lesson we have learned is to make and continue to make Christ the center of our home! Without him, I don't know where we would be!!

2)The second most important thing that I have learned is that it's OK to ask for help!! I sometimes laugh at the mentality that I had when people would talk to me about parenting when I was pregnant. They would say things like, "Enjoy your free time now, and enjoy getting to sleep all night! Call us if you ever need someone to come help out during the day." I remember thinking, don't these people know that I can handle this? I mean, there were many times I pulled all nighters in college! I can function just fine on no sleep, and of COURSE I can handle a newborn. It's just one baby, and I am used to handling a classroom full of 30 plus kids on a daily basis. These people just don't realize what I'm used to handling. HAHAHAHA!!! I laugh so much at that now! Of course I pulled all nighters in college; we all did- when you could sleep in the next morning and knew that you were guaranteed a good night's sleep the following night! There is definitely NO sleeping in with a newborn, and as a parent of a young baby, you never know when, if ever, your next night of good sleep may be. Also, being responsible for a room full of children for only a certain period everyday is nothing like the 24-7 responsibility of having your own! Don't get me wrong, the blessings, joys, and happiness of a young baby FAR outweigh these challenges, but my life went a lot smoother as soon as I realized that it was ok to admit that I needed some help! I have never appreciated or been more thankful for my own mom as much as I have this first year of Payton's life! She has helped me so much, and I don't know what I'd do without her! Grandparents are GREAT in so many ways!

3) Another important lesson we have learned is that you don't always have to play by the rules and don't sweat the small stuff. I used to stress myself out in the beginning when Payton was 2 months old and not yet sleeping in her own crib, or when she was 6 months old and wouldn't eat an ounce of baby food. After trying Payton in her crib several nights when she was that young and getting up every hour to rush across the house into her room to check on her or to simply pop her paci back in her mouth, I finally thought to myself, this is crazy!! Honestly, the most important thing in my opinion when it comes to sleep is to do what you need to do so that everyone in your family gets adequate rest. For some families, that probably means having your baby sleep in their room! That's great and perfectly fine! For me, that meant having Payton stay next to us for a little while longer. That's great and perfectly fine too, and truth be told, she still sleeps in her pack in play next to us most nights now. However, I am less stressed and able to sleep better, and that's worth it to me!!

4) Housework and laundry CAN wait! Unfortunately, I DO promise they wont magically disappear! Lol!! I also used to get down on myself for not being able to always have a spic and span house. I thought, "now holly, you only have ONE baby, and you are always home most of the day, there is no reason why dinner shouldn't be made every night and no reason why the house shouldn't be picked up and laundry put away." In the beginning, this mentality found me staying up late to make sure everything was in order, and a lot of the time, missing out on family time with Ryan and Payton. Yes, I do feel like it is my responsibility to keep an orderly home and to have meals for my family. However, sometimes spending time together as a family of an evening is more important. Unfortunately, Having Payton at home isn't going to last forever! :(

5) The last important lesson we learned quickly is how valuable it is to always be a team with your spouse. It is so easy to want to play the blame game when things go wrong, and it is just in our human nature to want to take out our stress and frustrations on the people we are closest to. However, we have learned that the quicker we can quit doing these things, the faster things get accomplished and the smoother things seem to run. After all, God designed us to do this TOGETHER! I truly feel that Ryan and I both fulfill different needs of Payton in different ways, so if we remember to always work together, we will hopefully be guiding, directing, and raising Payton to be the Godly woman that Christ has designed for her to be.
These are just a few of the MANY lessons we have grown to learn throughout this first year of parenting. Having Payton in our lives has been nothing but a blessing since day 1, and we are so excited to celebrate many other birthdays with her!! She continues to change and grow so much each day! We still aren't walking yet, but she is SO close! In a way, I am perfectly fine with her taking her sweet time. I am sure she'll be running all over the place long before we're ready!

Payton Elaine - Happy first birthday sweetheart! You have blessed us in SO many ways and continue to bring so much joy and happiness to our lives each and everyday! We love you!!!

11months!

I can't believe how quick our first birthday is approaching! Miss Payton is currently 11 months old and beginning to look more like a growing little toddler instead of a chubby little baby. Although it makes me sad to think of how quickly she is growing, I absolutely LOVE watching her discover new things, learn to move around EVERYWHERE, and begin to say her first few words. Life really doesn't get much better than this!

Since my last post, our new milestones include: pulling up to anything and everything, saying the words "ma ma, da da, dog, nana, ball, and bye," waving, eating table food instead of baby food, dancing, and....the best for last....sleeping all night long!!!! She also now has 6 teeth, 3 on top and 3 on bottom. We are definitely a growing little princess!

This month, we celebrated our first valentine's day as a family of 3, and Ryan celebrated his 29 birthday. I think it was kind of a bittersweet day for him; his first birthday as a dad, but also his first birthday without his mom. I am starting to quickly learn that the first holidays without Ryan's mom seem to be the particularly difficult days for him, but I continue to be so thankful for God's peace and strength that he continues to give to Ryan.

With Payton's first birthday right around the corner, it's crazy to reflect on what life was like last year at this time. Oh, we were so anxious to meet little Payton, and we kept fantasizing what life would be like with her here! At that time, I don't quite think we were able to grasp how much joy, love, and meaning she would bring to our life! Sometimes at night when Payton is sound asleep, I still find myself staring at her in pure amazement that she is ours.  (Well, actually she belongs to God, but he has given us the privilege of being her earthly parents!) How thankful we are that he has entrusted us with this precious life, and forever grateful for his example, forgiveness, and grace as we continue to learn how to be Godly parents!!

My next post will include pictures of Payton's first birthday! We are anxious to see if she will be walking by then. We keep waiting for her to take those first few steps. Check back soon to find out!!!

Payton is now 10 months old!  She is pulling up to certain things and is all over the house!  She LOVES to talk!  Her vocabulary currently includes the words dog, mama, dada, bye-bye, and dog.  She is also waving to everyone! We're still struggling with eating.  I have about decided that she does SO much better when I let her feed herself. ( This little princess likes to be in control.....wonder who she gets that from!  haha!) This creates quite the mess, but at least she is getting some nutrition.  Her favorite foods still include yogurt, crackers, cherrios, and bananas.  Payton has 5 teeth and is working on number 6.  Ryan and I are LOVING this stage with her.  (We say that about every stage, but this one has been exceptionally fun!)  She is so much more interactive, playful, and curious about things.  Because of my teaching background, I am definitely all about this!  We read lots of books, sing lots of songs, and play with different puzzles and blocks.  I have so much fun spending my days with her!

Ryan and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary yesterday.  A couple weekends ago, we went to St. Louis for the weekend to celebrate while my parents kept Payton.  It was a nice get-away.  We spent last night eating a dinner at home in shifts, playing in the floor with Payton, enjoying bath time and story time, followed by some catch-up TV show watching on the DVR! Nothing too romantic, but exactly how I would want to spend it.  Definitely looking forward to what this next year has in store for us!
